The basic Nyāya-Vedāntin debate

The debate between the Naiyāyikas and Vedāntins over whether all action is motivated by rāga occurs within the debate over how to characterize The Vedāntins argue that is a state of pure, eternal bliss. The Naiyāyikas deny this, and argue that is the complete absence of pain.1

In his commentary to Nyāyasūtra 1.1.22, Vātsyāyana summarizes the Vedāntin position: “Some think that in the eternal bliss of the true self, which is like an immensity of size, is manifested. By that manifestation [of eternal bliss], the completely liberated [person] is happy” (Thakur 1967: 453, lines 1–2).2 Uddyotakara, a later Nyāya commentator, paraphrases the argument for this claim:
